Pediatric ENT Q & A

What conditions are treated by a pediatric ENT?

Dr. Hensen treats ENT problems that begin at birth, such as tongue-tie (ankyloglossia), a condition that limits tongue movement.

As children grow, they may face many ENT problems, such as:

  • Sinusitis
  • Tonsillitis
  • Ear infections
  • Hearing loss
  • Asthma and allergies
  • Chronic runny nose
  • Nasal obstruction
  • Swallowing disorders
  • Airway problems
  • Foreign object in their nose or throat

As a highly experienced head and neck surgeon, Dr. Hensen also treats children with tumors, congenital ear deformities, and cleft lip and palate.

What procedures are performed by pediatric ENT specialists?

Surgery is always the last option for treating pediatric ENT conditions, but in some cases, a surgical procedure is the best option. These are a few examples of pediatric procedures:

Myringoplasty and tympanoplasty

Myringoplasty and tympanoplasty are procedures to repair a perforated eardrum. A myringoplasty temporarily plugs a hole in the eardrum, giving it time to naturally heal. Dr. Hensen performs a tympanoplasty to replace a missing part of the eardrum.

Ear tube surgery

If your child has frequent ear infections or fluid trapped in their ear, Dr. Hensen may implant an ear tube. The tube lets fluid drain and improves ventilation when an infection blocks the eustachian tube.

Tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy

Dr. Hensen may recommend surgery to remove your child’s tonsils and/or adenoids when these structures are infected and cause chronic sore throats or frequent strep throat.

What hearing services are provided for children?

Hearing is essential for children to develop normal speech, language, and social skills. Slow speech development, failing to respond to your voice, and inattention at school are all signs of hearing loss.

Dr. Hensen performs several types of hearing exams, depending on your child’s age. He may watch your child’s reaction to changes in sound or use tests that seem more like a game, so they engage toddlers and provide an accurate measure of their hearing.

When possible, Dr. Hensen does a full hearing evaluation to determine if all the parts of your child’s ear are functioning. This type of testing, however, requires children to be alert and able to respond appropriately.

If your child has hearing loss, Dr. Hensen provides StarkeyⓇ children’s hearing aids. These devices come equipped with smart technology, and they’re sturdy so they hold up well. Starkey hearing aids come in many colors, so children can choose their favorite color.
